Surrey Wildlife Trust manage over 60 nature reserves in Surrey, providing some of the county's most important homes for wildlife and covering over 4% of the county. Surrey has one of the fastest-declining wildlife populations of any county in England* with a third of Surrey’s species now either extinct or at risk of extinction.
As we continue to work on our Go Green Initiative, we were keen to volunteer our time and spent a day at Nower Wood Education Reserve. Our day consisted of the Datapharm team clearing invasive holly scrub to restore the ancient woodland. We were well equipped with tools provided by the team at Nower Wood and it was a great opportunity for some team building whilst helping one another cut down and clear the holly.
As well as clearing the holly, we were also given the option of a guided walk around the reserve in the afternoon. We learnt a lot about the ancient oak woodland, artificial ponds that had been built and the species that inhabit the woods. Nower Wood are keen to provide an inclusive experience for all and have made a walk which is accessible for wheelchair users so that they can enjoy the beautiful woodland. There are also wooden carvings dotted around the walk for both adults and children to enjoy, the hanging owl is particularly life-like!
